Even the best material will leak if the O-ring is too loose (no compression) or too tight (pinched or extruded). O-ring dimensions are defined by inner diameter (ID), cross-section (CS) , and the applicable standard system. Understanding these details ensures a perfect fit in your groove. The Two Critical Numbers
Inner Diameter (ID) determines which shaft or bore the O-ring seals. ID tolerance typically ranges from ±0.10 mm to ±0.36 mm for general use; precision applications require ±0.05 mm. A mismatch of 0.2 mm can cause leakage.
Cross-Section (CS) —the thickness of the ring—dictates compression ratio (normally 15–30%). For high pressure (>30 MPa), choose a thicker CS (≥3.55 mm) to resist extrusion. For low pressure (<5 MPa), thinner CS (≤1.8 mm) works fine. Precision CS tolerance can be as tight as ±0.02 mm.
Four Global Standards You Must Know
GB/T 3452.1-2016 (China) follows ISO 3601. Size notation: ID × CS (mm) , e.g., “10×2.65”. CS series: 1.8, 2.65, 3.55 mm. Two tolerance grades: N (normal, ±0.1 mm) and S (precision, ±0.03 mm for hydraulic/pneumatic). Ideal for domestic machinery and petrochemicals.
AS568A (US standard) is mandatory in North American aerospace and automotive. Sizes are numbered, e.g., #007 = ID 3.69 mm, CS 1.78 mm. Grades A (precision, ±0.02 mm) and B (normal). Limited to eight materials like FKM and VMQ.
ISO 3601 (International) offers the broadest compatibility. ID range 1.8–500 mm, CS 0.7–12.5 mm. Tolerance classes: CR (normal, ±0.1 mm) and WR (precision, ±0.05 mm). Covers 10+ materials. Preferred for hydraulic systems worldwide.
JIS B2401 (Japan) uses ID × CS (mm) with unique CS series: 1.9, 3.1, 5.7 mm. Types: P (general), G (high pressure), V (vacuum). Tolerances: ±0.15 mm normal. Common in Japanese automotive and precision machinery.
Special Sizes and Custom Solutions
Micro O-rings (ID ≤10 mm, CS ≤1.0 mm) follow ISO 3601-3 and require tolerances of ±0.01 mm. Used in watches, sensors, and medical devices.
Large O-rings (ID ≥500 mm, CS ≥10 mm) for pressure vessels and pipe flanges. For example, “1000×12.5 mm”. They may need molded segmented construction with flash trimmed to ≤0.1 mm.
Non-standard sizes require custom tooling. Provide a drawing or detailed parameters. We ensure the compression ratio stays between 15–30% to avoid extrusion or leakage.
