Extrusion: When the Seal Is Forced into the Gap

The most common failure mode in high-pressure cylinders is extrusion. The hydraulic pressure forces the soft seal material into the gap between the rod and the gland. Once the seal enters the gap, it is pinched, torn, and destroyed.

Why does extrusion happen?

  • Insufficient hardness: Soft seals (below Shore A 80) cannot resist high pressure.

Our solution

We use Shore A 90+ hardness compounds for high-pressure applications. We recommend engineered backup rings (step-cut or spiral-cut) that close the clearance gap without complicating installation. For extreme pressures (above 50 MPa), we use composite seals with PTFE faces that resist extrusion even at zero hardness.

Wear: When the Seal Grinds Away

Every time the rod extends and retracts, friction wears the seal. Over thousands of cycles, this wear reduces the seal’s cross-section until it no longer contacts the rod surface.

Why does compression set happen?

  • Poor compound formulation: Inadequate crosslinking allows permanent deformation.
