How Wuxi ChuncoTech’s Hydraulic Seals Maintain Leak-Free Performance After 10,000 Cycles
In our last article, “Why Are Wuxi ChuncoTech Rubber's Custom Rubber Gaskets the First Choice for Chemical Plant Safety Managers?”, we focused on static sealing. Today, we address the tougher challenge: dynamic hydraulic seals. In construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and industrial presses, hydraulic cylinders cycle thousands of times—each stroke stressing the rod seal and piston seal. Most seals begin leaking after a few thousand cycles due to wear, extrusion, or compression set. Wuxi ChuncoTech Rubber manufactures high-cycle hydraulic seals that achieve zero leakage after 10,000 cycles and beyond. Here is how.
Why Dynamic Seals Fail Prematurely
A hydraulic seal fails in one of three ways:
-
Extrusion: Pressure forces the seal into the clearance gap, where it is pinched and torn.
-
Wear: Friction against the rod or cylinder bore gradually removes material.
-
Compression set: The seal loses its elastic force and no longer contacts the surface.
Most seals fail from a combination of all three. We engineered our seals to resist each mechanism.

Hardness and Backup Rings
For pressures above 25 MPa, we use Shore A 90+ hardness compounds and engineered backup rings. The backup rings close the clearance gap, preventing extrusion. Our step-cut or spiral-cut backup rings are easier to install than solid rings and provide full 360° protection.
Low-Friction Compounds
To reduce wear, we use filled PTFE or UHMW-PE as a surface layer over an elastomeric core. These composite seals combine the elasticity of rubber with the low friction of engineering plastics. Friction coefficient drops from 0.5 (rubber on steel) to 0.1 (PTFE on steel). The result: longer life and lower heat generation.
Compression Set Resistance
For dynamic applications, compression set is critical. A seal that takes set loses contact pressure and leaks. Our peroxide-cured HNBR and FKM compounds achieve less than 15% compression set after 1,000 hours at 150°C. Your seal maintains its shape and its seal.
Real-World Performance: Excavator Runs 10,000 Hours Without Leak
A construction equipment manufacturer was experiencing hydraulic seal failures at 4,000 hours—well short of their 10,000-hour target. We supplied custom composite rod seals with optimized groove designs. Field testing showed zero leakage at 10,000 hours. The customer now specifies our seals for all their excavator cylinders.
