The Eight Materials You Must Know

Nitrile Rubber (NBR) remains the cost-effective champion for oil resistance. Its acrylonitrile content determines performance: higher nitrile means better oil resistance but lower low-temperature flexibility. NBR handles -40°C to 120°C (special to 150°C) and excels in automotive transmissions, hydraulic systems, and petroleum applications. Avoid it with polar solvents like acetone or brake fluid.

Fluorocarbon Rubber (FKM/Viton®) is the go-to for high-temperature and chemical resistance. It withstands -20°C to 200°C (special to 250°C) and resists strong acids, fuels, and many chemicals. After 70 hours at 200°C, its compression set stays under 25%. Use it in aircraft engines, chemical plants, and cylinder head seals. The trade-off: poor cold flexibility.

Silicone Rubber (VMQ) offers the widest temperature range: -60°C to 260°C. It is physiologically inert, making it the standard for FDA-compliant seals in food and medical devices. However, silicone swells in oils and fuels. For medical applications, specify platinum-cured VMQ to avoid peroxide byproducts.

EPDM is the weather and water expert. It resists UV, ozone, steam, hot water, and dilute acids. Temperature range: -50°C to 150°C. It is the preferred material for new energy vehicle battery packs—resistant to lithium hexafluorophosphate electrolyte and achieving IP67 waterproofing. Never use EPDM with petroleum oils.

Chloroprene (CR) offers balanced weather resistance and moderate oil resistance. It is self-extinguishing and works well for outdoor seals, window gaskets, and cable jackets. Temperature range: -40°C to 120°C. In outdoor exposure, CR lasts 30% longer than general-purpose rubbers.

PTFE is chemically invincible—resists almost all acids, bases, and solvents. Temperature range: -200°C to 260°C with ultra-low friction. But PTFE lacks elasticity; it is often used as a PTFE-coated O-ring over an elastomeric core for chemical service.

Hydrogenated Nitrile (HNBR) upgrades NBR with better heat and ozone resistance. Temperature range: -30°C to 150°C (special to 180°C). It lasts 2–3 times longer than NBR in high-temperature oil environments, ideal for turbochargers and oil drilling equipment.

Butyl Rubber (IIR) has the lowest gas permeability of any rubber—4 to 10 times better than natural rubber. It excels in inner tubes, pharmaceutical stoppers, and vacuum seals. Do not use it with oils.
