The Double Challenge: Chemical + Fatigue

A fuel pump diaphragm faces two simultaneous attacks:

  • Chemical: Fuel (gasoline, diesel, ethanol blends) attacks the rubber compound.

  • Fatigue: The diaphragm flexes millions of times, creating cyclic stress.

Most materials can handle one challenge—but not both. A compound that resists fuel may be too stiff to flex. A flexible compound may swell in fuel.

Why do diaphragms fail?

  • Chemical swelling: The rubber absorbs fuel, loses strength, and tears.

  • Hardening: Fuel extracts plasticizers, leaving the rubber brittle.

The Material Solution

Not all fuel-resistant rubbers work for diaphragms. We select materials based on your fuel type:

  • Gasoline (up to 10% ethanol) : HNBR offers excellent balance of fuel resistance and fatigue life.

  • High-ethanol blends (E85) : FKM is required; HNBR swells in high ethanol.

  • Diesel and biodieselNBR or HNBR work well; FKM is overkill.

  • MethanolEPDM (but EPDM fails in gasoline—know your fuel).

We also offer fabric-reinforced diaphragms for high-pressure applications. The fabric carries the load; the rubber seals and flexes.

The Design Fix

Diaphragm geometry determines stress distribution. Flat diaphragps stress at the clamping edge. Convoluted diaphragms distribute stress but are harder to mold.

Our design rules:

  • Smooth clamping edges: No sharp corners where stress concentrates.

  • Optimized thickness: Too thick, and the diaphragm is stiff. Too thin, and it tears.

  • Reinforced center: For pushrod-actuated pumps, extra thickness at the pushrod contact point.
