A large-scale copper concentrator in South America suffered premature failure of rubber sheet liners inside its ore transfer chute. The original lining system failed after only 9 weeks in operation. Severe gouging, surface delamination and edge lifting appeared at the direct ore impact zone, triggering frequent unplanned shutdowns for maintenance and disrupting stable ore conveyance.
The customer initially selected a 12 mm single-compound SBR rubber sheet from conventional universal rubber sheet grades. Material selection was based solely on nominal hardness and tensile strength values, without considering the combined impact and abrasion conditions of the mining chute. On-site wear testing recorded a material loss rate of 2.8 mm per 1,000 tonnes of ore processed, far exceeding the design target of 0.6 mm per 1,000 tonnes. The chute handles copper ore with a maximum lump size of 250 mm and bulk density of 1.8 t/m³.
After thorough technical assessment by the ChuncoTech Rubber engineering team, product defect was ruled out. The root cause of failure was a mismatch between conventional rubber compound performance and the site’s impact-dominated wear mechanism, compounded by improper material selection and inadequate bonding procedures.

Problem Diagnosis and In-Depth Technical Analysis
ChuncoTech’s rubber specialists performed site inspection, lab testing and working condition simulation, identifying three core issues that accelerated liner degradation.
1. Mismatch between abrasion mechanism and rubber compound
The standard SBR sheet was formulated for sliding abrasion and delivered a DIN abrasion value of ~90 mm³. It performs well under low-friction sliding wear but cannot withstand high-energy impact and cutting forces. In this chute, large copper ore lumps strike the lining at an inclined angle, generating concentrated compressive stress and cutting action.
The wear pattern — deep gouging at the impact point and mild wear downstream — confirms that impact cutting, not sliding friction, dominated material loss.
2. Misguided hardness selection logic
The customer followed the common misconception that higher hardness equals superior wear resistance and chose 65 Shore A rubber. For impact-abrasion mining environments, hardness is not a reliable indicator of wear performance. Hard SBR lacks elasticity and tear resistance. Under repeated dynamic impact, it cannot absorb shock energy and easily develops crack propagation and surface spalling.
While the old liner met hardness specs, it lacked critical tear strength and rebound resilience required for cyclic impact loads.
3. Poor bonding fatigue resistance leading to delamination
The original liner was bonded to the steel chute substrate using generic contact adhesive. Alternating shear stress from continuous heavy impact quickly exceeded the adhesive’s fatigue limit. Site inspection measured edge lifting of 4–6 mm. Fine ore particles penetrated the gap between rubber and steel, expanding delamination and eventually causing large-area peeling.
Key failure metrics summary: Actual wear rate: 2.8 mm/1,000 t (4.7× design target); Hardness remained stable at 65 Shore A (ruling out chemical aging); Delaminated area accounted for 15% of total liner surface after 9 weeks.
Custom Optimized Solution & Technical Principle | ChuncoTech Rubber
Based on the mine’s operating conditions and failure root causes, ChuncoTech engineers developed a custom impact-resistant NR/SBR blended rubber lining solution (upgraded from our standard rubber sheet series), paired with crosslinked bonding and mechanical edge retention to eliminate gouging and delamination.
1. Working-condition tailored rubber compound
We abandoned single ordinary SBR and adopted high-elasticity custom NR/SBR blend formulated for mining impact conditions. Formulation prioritizes tear strength and rebound resilience rather than high hardness.
The customized mining-grade rubber sheet achieves tear strength >80 kN/m and rebound resilience >50%. It absorbs instantaneous impact energy from large ore lumps to prevent cutting and gouging, while DIN abrasion is controlled below 70 mm³ to maintain sliding wear resistance in downstream sections. Hardness is adjusted to 60 Shore A for better compliance and stress dispersion under dynamic impact.
2. Zoned thickness reinforcement for high-wear zones
Targeted reinforcement was applied at the severe-wear impact zone. Thickness increases from 12 mm to 20 mm at the ore impact area, while downstream sliding sections retain 12 mm. This design strengthens critical locations without unnecessary material cost increase, fully utilizing the customizable processing advantage of our rubber sheet products.
3. Upgraded two-component crosslinked bonding system
Generic contact adhesive was replaced with mining-grade two-component crosslinked adhesive, with bond strength >6 MPa. It delivers excellent shear resistance and impact fatigue performance. Qualification testing shows the bonded assembly survives 5,000 continuous impact cycles without delamination or debonding.
4. Dual fixation: chemical bond + mechanical edge locking
On top of adhesive bonding, rubber-capped countersunk bolts are installed every 500 mm across the liner surface and edges. The dual structure removes risks of edge lifting even if adhesive weakens. Rubber bolt caps prevent abrasion and damage from ore flow.
Note: Parameters below apply to this custom mining-grade NR/SBR sheet. Our standard rubber sheet provides universal wear resistance for general industrial scenarios. Custom formula and structure upgrades are available for mining heavy-duty working conditions.

Technical Parameter Comparison: Original Failed Design VS ChuncoTech Optimized Design

| Hardness | 65 Shore A | 60 Shore A | Better elastic compliance and shock absorption |
| DIN Abrasion Value | ~90 mm³ | <70 mm³ | Balanced sliding & impact wear resistance |
| Tear Strength | Conventional grade (low performance) | >80 kN/m (custom mining grade) | Resist ore cutting and local gouging |
| Rebound Resilience | Conventional grade (poor elasticity) | >50% (custom mining grade) | Absorb instantaneous impact energy |
| Impact Zone Thickness | Uniform 12 mm | 20 mm impact zone + 12 mm downstream (custom cutting) | Localized reinforcement with cost control |

On-Site Implementation & 12-Month Field Verification
Implementation Process
ChuncoTech’s technical team completed installation in four standardized stages:
1. Substrate preparation: Steel surface abrasive blasting to Sa 2.5 standard, followed by compatible primer application to boost adhesion.
2. Adhesive application: Two-component crosslinked adhesive mixed strictly per ratio. Full curing for 24 hours at 20°C before mechanical fastening.
3. Mechanical fixing: Rubber-capped countersunk bolts installed and torqued to specification. Rubber plugs seal bolt heads to block dust and ore abrasion.
4. Monitoring benchmark setup: Fixed wear measurement points marked at impact zone and downstream sections for long-term tracking.

Long-Term Operation Results
After 12 months of continuous operation and quarterly inspection:
Impact zone wear rate stabilized at 0.7 mm per 1,000 tonnes, only 17% above design expectation and 75% lower than the original failed liner. No delamination, edge lifting or abnormal wear appeared during the whole monitoring period. Bolt torque remained within specification.
The copper concentrator achieved zero unplanned shutdowns and zero liner replacement in 12 months. Previously, two emergency replacements were required within a 9-month window. Maintenance downtime and production loss were greatly reduced.

Engineering Summary & Custom Solution Service
ChuncoTech Rubber engineering team states:
Rubber liner selection for mining chutes must follow the dominant wear mechanism — impact, sliding or cutting — instead of relying solely on hardness. Tear strength and rebound resilience are more reliable indicators for rubber liners under mining impact-abrasion conditions.
